General Dog Training Tips
Training Tips &Comet Canine Training Methods
1. Why should I train my dog?
a. Trained dogs are easier to live with, so you can interact with your dog like a cherished family member, not a 'bad boy'.
b. Dogs are happier when they know the rules and can stay on your good side.
c. To reduce or eliminate problem behaviors such as jumping up on people, pulling on leash, aggression, or running away.
2. Is it ever too late to start?
a. NO! Assuming the dog is in good physical condition, training can improve behavior even in older dogs.
3. When can I start training my new puppy?
a. As soon as the puppy leaves its mother and comes to your home you should start the basics such as potty training and crate training , and basic manners such as not jumping on you, not chewing on people, and basic commands such as sit, down, come, and walking nice on leash.Comet Canine recommends that puppies be trained with lots of food and praise to reinforce the behaviors you like. You can start more formal obedience about 12 weeks old. Remember, social skills are a must, start socializing your new puppy right away!
4. What does my dog need to know?
a. Basic manners, no jumping, no pulling, no chewing, etc.
b. Commands such as sit, down, stay, come, and heel.

Important handling tips:
DO:
- Make sure you have the right equipment
- Make sure you have the right knowledge
- Keep the leash slack at all times
- Notice that dogs always associate your correction or praise with their LAST action, so remember to reward your dog immediately after he does the right thing.
- Learn to read your dog, and anticipate ‘breaks’
- Make sure your dog obeys every command you give
- Practice at least once a day, twice is better, with a 15 minute session.
- Correct your dog unless he knows what he was supposed to be doing, and he knows he did the wrong thing
- Do not repeat commands, because he will get used to getting the same command twice, ignoring the first one.
- Do not touch the dog while he is receiving a command
- Do not give your dog a command unless you are sure he will do it, or unless you are able to make sure he follows through with it.
- Do not attempt to work your dog off leash until he reaches a 10 out of 10 performance ON leash.
